Dynamics of Josephson junctions and single-flux-quantum networks with superconductor-insulator-normal metal junction shunts
Within the framework of the microscopic model of tunneling, we modelled the
behavior of the Josephson junction shunted by the
Superconductor-Insulator-Normal metal (SIN) tunnel junction. We found that the
electromagnetic impedance of the SIN junction yields both the
frequency-dependent damping and dynamic reactance which leads to an increase in
the effective capacitance of the circuit. We calculated the dc I-V curves and
transient characteristics of these circuits and explained their quantitative
differences to the curves obtained within the resistively shunted junction
model. The correct operation of the basic single-flux-quanta circuits with such
SIN-shunted junctions, i.e. the Josephson transmission line and the toggle
flip-flop, have also been modelled.Comment: 8 pages incl. 7 figure
Single-charge escape processes through a hybrid turnstile in a dissipative environment
We have investigated the static, charge-trapping properties of a hybrid
superconductor---normal metal electron turnstile embedded into a high-ohmic
environment. The device includes a local Cr resistor on one side of the
turnstile, and a superconducting trapping island on the other side. The
electron hold times, t ~ 2-20s, in our two-junction circuit are comparable with
those of typical multi-junction, N >= 4, normal-metal single-electron tunneling
devices. A semi-phenomenological model of the environmental activation of
tunneling is applied for the analysis of the switching statistics. The
experimental results are promising for electrical metrology.Comment: Submitted to New Journal of Physics 201
Decoherence due to discrete noise in Josephson qubits
We study decoherence produced by a discrete environment on a charge Josephson
qubit by introducing a model of an environment of bistable fluctuators. In
particular we address the effect of noise where memory effects play an
important role. We perform a detailed investigation of various computation
procedures (single shot measurements, repeated measurements) and discuss the
problem of the information needed to characterize the effect of the
environment. Although in general information beyond the power spectrum is
needed, in many situations this results in the knowledge of only one more
microscopic parameter of the environment. This allows to determine which
degrees of freedom of the environment are effective sources of decoherence in
each different physical situation considered.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure
Andreev Level Qubit
We investigate the dynamics of a two-level Andreev bound state system in a
transmissive quantum point contact embedded in an rf-SQUID. Coherent coupling
of the Andreev levels to the circulating supercurrent allows manipulation and
read out of the level states. The two-level Hamiltonian for the Andreev levels
is derived, and the effect of interaction with the quantum fluctuations of the
induced flux is studied. We also consider an inductive coupling of qubits, and
discuss the relevant SQUID parameters for qubit operation and read out.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Decoherence in circuits of small Josephson junctions
We discuss dephasing by the dissipative electromagnetic environment and by
measurement in circuits consisting of small Josephson junctions. We present
quantitative estimates and determine in which case the circuit might qualify as
a quantum bit. Specifically, we analyse a three junction Cooper pair pump and
propose a measurement to determine the decoherence time .Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Design and construction of new central and forward muon counters for CDF II
New scintillation counters have been designed and constructed for the CDF
upgrade in order to complete the muon coverage of the central CDF detector, and
to extend this coverage to larger pseudorapidity. A novel light collection
technique using wavelength shifting fibers, together with high quality
polystyrene-based scintillator resulted in compact counters with good and
stable light collection efficiency over lengths extending up to 320 cm. Their
design and construction is described and results of their initial performance
are reported.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figure
